In 1771, a liberty pole was erected in the center of the city of Schenectady, New York, as a protest against British policies and interference in the community’s affairs.

Atop that liberty pole was hung a homemade flag with the simple but powerful word “LIBERTY” sewn in white.

Later, that Liberty flag was carried by the 1st New York Regiment during the Revolutionary War.
